Keep Only a Few Friends (of benefit) ...Advice of Sufyaan Ath-Thawri

Sufyaan Ath-Thawri: A True Mountain of Knowledge & the Leader of Believers in Hadeeth

Sufyaan ath-Thawri (may Allah have mercy on him) said that one foolishly compromised one’s religion when one kept too many friends. Having too many acquaintances diverts one from one’s duty towards one’s Lord, for a person who has many friends is always busy socializing with them and fulfilling their rights over him; so he becomes preoccupied with people when he really should be preoccupied with his religious duties. The ill-effects of being too gregarious can last well beyond a social gathering. Sufyaan said,“I might meet a brother and as a result, remain heedless (of what I should be doing) for an entire month.”

A friend, Sufyaan insisted, should be someone who helps one to improve as a Muslim; otherwise he is not worth keeping as a friend. Sufyaan expressed this sentiment when he said, “If someone is not with you, then he is against you.”

And Yousuf ibn Asbaat reported that he heard Sufyaan ath-Thawri say, “Whenever I spoke contrary to the desires of any man, he, regardless of who he was, would inevitably become furious with me. The people of knowledge and piety have departed.

Sufyaan once advised someone to test the character of the person he wanted to befriend. Sufyaan said,“Choose whoever you want as your companion. But when you have made your choice, make him angry, and then order someone to go a nd ask him what he thinks about you-without him knowing that you sent that person.

Bakr ibn Muhammad Al-’Aabid related that Sufyaan ath-Thawri once said to him, “Direct me to a man with whom I can keep company.” Sufyaan said, “You are searching for something that cannot be found.”

Khalf ibn Ismaa’eel Al-Barzaanee reported that he heard Sufyaan ath-Thawri said,“Acquaint yourself with fewer people, and as a result, you will backbite less (frequently).”

subhanAllaah! a beautiful advice from Sufyaan ath Thawree

Sufyaan once wrote to one of his Muslim brothers

May Allaah, with His Mercy, protect both me and you from the Hellfire.

I advise both you and myself to fear Allaah.

And I warn you not to turn to ignorance after you have learned, not to turn to destruction after you have seen and recognized the truth, and not to leave the (Straight) Path after it has been made clear to you.

Do not become deceived by worldly people, and do not become unduly impressed by the way they strive for and greedily gather worldly things, for the terror (that will envelop them on the Day of Resurrection) is indeed SEVERE.

The danger (of the Day of Resurrection) is grave indeed, but what is more, is that it is near at hand.

So occupy yourself exclusively with the Hereafter, and empty your heart of all other thoughts; once you have done that, work hard! Do not waste time! And flee from the world and its temptations! Travel to the Hereafter (with your worship) before you are taken there… I have indeed given you the same advice that I gave myself.

And understand that success comes from Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala). The key to gaining His help is supplication, prayer, feeling remorse for past negligence, and complete submission to Him.

Your days and nights are numbered, so use the time you have left wisely, and do not be negligent in fulfilling the rights of your Lord.

I ask Allaah, Who has blessed us to know Him, not to entrust us and you to our ownselves; and I ask Allaah to be our Guardian and Helper, just as He is the Guardian and Helper of His beloved, righteous slaves.

Beware of doing that which will spoil your deeds, and know that it is showing off that spoils a person’s deeds; and if it is not showing off, then it is conceitedness – for you to imagine that you are better than one of your Muslim brothers, when in reality he performs more good deeds than you do; or perhaps he performs his deeds with a purer intention than you do.

And even if you are not conceited, beware of developing a love for praise.

Be ever so careful not to come to love other people’s praise of your good deeds, or the respect they feel for you and bestow upon you because of your good deeds.

And beware of desiring that others should help you in your personal affairs just because they have become impressed with your good deeds.

You surely claim (as does everyone else), after all, that you are doing good deeds only for the sake of Allaah (subhaanahu wa ta’aala); well, then turn that claim into a reality.

If you want to be less desirous of this world – its things, wealth, and pleasures – and more desirous of the Hereafter — Paradise and its bliss – then remember death frequently.

And know that you have long term hopes for this world – which one should not have — if you fear Allaah only a little or if you recklessly perpetrate sins.

And one will be sufficiently regretful and wretched on the Day of Resurrection if he has knowledge but does not apply it.

deed's that wash away our sins

1. Perfecting ones ablution

“No worshipper perfects his ablution except that his past and future sins are forgiven.” (Hasan, Al-Bazzar. Al-Haythami and Al-Mundhiri agreed upon.)

2. Fasting in Ramadan

“Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking Allahs reward then his past and future sins are forgiven.” (Ahmad)

3. Night prayer in Ramadan

“Whoever stands (in prayer) in Ramadan out of faith and seeking Allahs reward then his past and future sins are forgiven.” (Sahih An-Nasa’i)

4. Night of Al-Qadr

Laylat-ul-Qadr or the Night of Al-Qadr can be expected in the odd nights of the last 10 days of Ramadan. He who performs the night prayer in it out of belief and seeking Allahs reward his past and future sins are forgiven. (Ahmad)

5. Thanking Allah after eating and putting ones clothes on

“Whoever ate food and then said, Praise be to Allah who has fed me this food and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part, is forgiven his past sins. And whoever wears a garment and says, Praise be to Allah who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it for me, without any strength or power on my part’, is forgiven his past and future sins.” Ibn Majah, Abu Dawood, Al-Tirmidhi, An-Nasa’i, and others).

6. Getting old in Islam

“No one reaches 40 years in Islam except that Allah protects him from madness, leprosy and leucoderma. When he is 50, Allah makes his reckoning easy. When he reaches 60, Allah grants him repentance. And when he reaches 70, Allah loves him and the inhabitants of the heavens love him.

And when he reaches 80, Allah accepts his good deeds and overlooks his sins. When he reaches 90, Allah forgives his past and future sins, and he is named ‘the prisoner of Allah on earth’ and is granted intercession (for forgiveness) for his family.” (Hasan, Ibn Asakir. Ahmad Shakir said in his notes on Al-Musnad, 8/23, 25: “Its chain is at least Hasan. It is supported with other chains which raise it to the level of Sahih.”)

7. Neither Ruqya nor belief in bad omens

“I was told: ‘These are your people and amongst them there are 70,000 who shall enter Paradise without being taken to either account or torment.’ …’They are those who do not make Ruqya nor seek it, nor believe in bad omens, but trust in their Lord (Allah).’” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

8. Patiently bearing childrens death

“Whoever buries three children, Allah will forbid the (Hell) Fire for him.” (Sahih, Tabarani in Al-Kabeer, Al-Albani authenticated it in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 6238)

“There are no two Muslim parents whose three children die before reaching puberty except that Allah will enter them into Paradise due to His mercy to the children.

It will be said to them, ‘Enter the Paradise,’ so they will say, ‘Not until our parents enter first.’ It will be said, ‘Enter the Paradise you and your parents.’ (Ahmad and An-Nasa’i; Al-Albani authenticated it in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 5780)

“Whoever remains content and patient after the death of three of his offspring will enter Jannah.”

A woman said, “What about two?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “And two.”(Sahih, An-Nasa’i and Ibn Hibban; authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 5969)

9. Raising three daughters

“There is no one from my Ummah who takes care of three daughters or three sisters, and is nice to them, except that they will be a screen (protection) for him from the Fire.” (Sahih, Al-Bayhaqi and Al-Bukhari in Al-Adab, authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 5372)

10. Defending a Muslims honor

“Whoever defends the honor of his brother in absence has the right with Allah to be freed from the Fire.” (Sahih, Ahmad and Al-Tabarani; authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 6240)

11. Sincerity to Allah

No servant who says ‘La ilaha ill Allah’, seeking the pleasure of Allah, will reach the Day of Judgment, except that Allah will forbid the Fire for him. (Ahmad and Al-Bukhari) Hafidh Ibn Hajr said, “It’s not like that (i.e. not entering the Fire at all) for everyone who believed in Tawheed and worshiped, but it is specific for the sincere, and sincerity (Ikhlas) requires the realization of its meaning by the heart. One cannot imagine that the heart will reach that while persisting in sins, as the heart would be filled with the love and fear of Allah, whereupon limbs will embark upon obedience and leave disobedience.”

12. Crying out of fear of Allah

“No man who cried out of fear of Allah will enter the Fire until the milk returns to the udder, and dust in the path of Allah (Jihad) and the smoke of the Fire cannot go together.” (Ahmad, Al-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasa’i; authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 7778)

13. Congregational prayer for 40 days

“Whoever prays to Allah for 40 days in congregation, reaching the opening Takbeer (Takbeer Al-Ihram), will have two (rewards) written for him: freedom from the Fire and freedom from hypocrisy.” (Al-Tirmidhi, declared Hasan by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 6365)
“Whoever is easy-going, easy to deal with and kindhearted, Allah will forbid the Fire for him.” (Sahih, Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak, Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Tabarani; authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 6484)

14. Praying four Rakat before and after Dhuhr

“Whoever is consistent in praying four units of prayer before Dhuhr and four after it, Fire will be forbidden for him.” (Sahih, Abu Dawood, An-Nasa’i, Al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah; authenticated by Al-Albani in Sahih Al-Jami, no. 6195)

15. Praying before sunrise and after sunset

“No one will enter Fire who prays before sunrise and after sunset.” (Ahmad, Muslim, Abu Dawood, and An-Nasa’i; meaning: Fajr and Asr prayers)

16. Good character

advice for a lifetime

Ibn Mas’ood RadiAllaahu‘anhu said, “Certainty in Faith (Yaqeen) is that you do not make the people happy by angering Allaah, and that you do not envy anyone for that which Allaah has provided, and that you do not blame anyone for something which Allaah has not given you. Since provision will not be brought on by a persons craving after it, nor will it be repelled by a person’s disliking it. ndeed Allaah through His Justice has made joy and happiness dependent upon having certain faith and contentment, and He has made worries and sorrows spring from doubt and displeasure.

Fifty Authentic Hadeeth with great virtues, Alhamdulillaah:

Gaining (Great) Rewards
The Hadeeth of the Prophet which were chosen for their Great Rewards for easy actions

Hadeeth taken from ‘Saheeh al-Kalima at-Tayib’, by Shaykhul Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah

Checked by: Muhammad Nassirud-Deen al-Albaani

Compiled by: Hajaj bin Abdullaah al-Areeni

Translated by: Abbas Abu Yahya

1- The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said : Whoever says :
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَه،ُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْد،ُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, to Him belongs the Dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things.’ –
La ilaha ‘illa Allaahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shayin qadeer one hundred times in one day, then it is equivalent to, him freeing ten slaves, and a hundred good deeds are written for him, and a hundred bad deeds are erased, and it is a protection for him against shaytaan during that day until the evening, and no one comes with a better deed than him except for the man who does more actions than him.

2 – The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said: Whoever says : -
‘Far is Allaah from imperfection and praise is for Him’
Subhana allaahi wa bihamdihi
one hundred times in one day, then his mistakes / sins are cancelled out, even if they are like the foam on the ocean.

3 – The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
There are two words which are gentle on the tongue, heavy on the scales , and beloved to ar-Rahmaan : -
‘Far is Allaah from imperfection and praise is for Him, Far is Allaah The Sublime from imperfection
Subhana allaahi wa bihamdihi, Subhana allaahil atheem

4 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Indeed that I say :
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ
‘Far is Allaah from imperfection, and praise be to Allaah, and there is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest,’
Subhana allaahi, wal hamdu lillaahi, wa la illaah ila Allaah, wa Allaahu akbar - is more beloved to me than what the sun rose upon.

5 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Is one of you so weak that he cannot acquire a thousand good deeds everyday? So a questioner from amongst those sitting there asked him : How can anyone of us gain a thousand rewards?
He said : say :
Far is Allaah from imperfection –
Subhana allaahi
a hundred times, so a thousand good deeds are written for him or a thousand sins are cancelled for him.

6 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Shall I not inform you of a statement, which is a treasure from the treasures of Paradise? I said : yes O Messenger of Allaah, may my father & mother be sacrificed for you! He said : say :
There is no capability nor is there any power except with Allaah.
La hawla wa la quwwata illa billaa

7 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Whosoever, reaches the morning & reaches the evening and he says :
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ
- ‘Allaah is far from imperfection and all praise is for Him’ –
Subhana allaahi wa bihamdihi
one hundred times, then no one brings anything better than him on the day of judgment, than what he has brought. Except the one who says what he has said, or has said more than him.

8 – On the authority of Mu’aad bin Abdillaah ibn Khubayb on the authority of his father who said we went out on a very dark and rainy night searching for the Messenger of Allaah so that he could pray for us, then I found him and he صَلَّى اللَّه عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said : Recite. So I did not say anything, then he said : Recite. So I did not say anything, and he said : Recite, so I said : what should I recite? He said : recite :
"قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ"
‘Say that Allaah is the One.’ And the last two soorahs (al-muawaathatayan) in the evening and the morning, three times for it will suffice you for everything.

9 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Indeed the major supplication for forgiveness is to say
O Allaah You are my Lord, there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, You created me and I am Your slave and I am abiding to Your covenant and promise as best as I can, I seek refuge in You from the evil that I have committed, I profess to you my sins and I acknowledge Your favour upon me, so forgive me verily no one forgives sins except you.
so if the worshipper says this when the morning arrives, truly believing in it and he dies enters Paradise, and if he says this when the evening arrives truly believing in it enters Paradise.

10 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
There is not one from amongst the worshippers, that if he says, in the morning of everyday an the evening of every night : -
In the name of Allaah with whose name nothing is harmed what so ever, on this earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All Hearing and All Knowing
three times nothing harms him what so ever.

11 – On the authority of Abu Huraira may Allaah be pleased with him, some one came to him to take from the charity – which the Prophet - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – had placed Abu Huraira to look after, and this person came night after night, so on the third night Abu Huraira said to him : I will take you to the Messenger of Allaah. So he said Why don’t you leave me and I will teach you some words that Allaah will benefit you by - and Abu Huraira was of those who were very attentive regarding good deeds – so that the person said to him: When you go to bed, read Ayaat ul-Kursi:
(الله لا إلهَ إلا هُوَ الحيُ القَيُومَ )
(( Allaah, none has the right to be worshipped except Him The Ever living, The One Who sustains and protects all that exists ))
until the end of the ayat, then this will continue to be a protection for you from Allaah, and shaytan will not be able to come near you until the morning arrives. The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said: He spoke the truth even though he is a liar, [ that was shaytan].

12 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Who ever recites the last two Ayaat from Soorah al-Baqara at night, those two verses will be sufficient for him.

13 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Shall I not show what will be better for you than a servant? If you lie down on your bed, then say SubhanAllaah 33 times, and say al-hamdulillaah 33 times, and say Allaahu akbar 34 times.

14 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Who ever wakes up at night, and says : -
‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, He has the Dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things, praise is for Him, and Far is Allaah from imperfection, and There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah, and Allaah is the Greatest, there is no capability nor is there any power except with Allaah the Most High the ‘Atheem.’ (Supreme)

Then he says: اللهمَ اغْفِرْلي O Allaah forgive me, or he supplicates and his supplication is answered, and if he makes wudu and he pray then his prayer is accepted.

15- The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Who ever goes to bed with purification….there is not a hour of the night that he asks Allaah for something of good from this world and the hereafter, except that Allaah grants him that which he asked for.

16 – Abu Salma said that he heard Abu Qatada say that he heard the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – say:
A good dream is from Allaah and a bad dream is from shaytaan, so if anyone sees something in his dream which he dislikes, then he should spit on his left side 3 times when he awakens, and he should seek refuge with Allaah from its evil, then it will not harm him if Allaah so wills.

17 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
A good dream is from Allaah, so if any one of you sees something in his dream that he likes, then he should not relate it to anyone except the one whom he loves, and if he sees that which he dislikes, then he should not relate it to anyone, rather he should spit on his left side 3 times, and he should seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of the accursed shaytaan, and the evil of what he saw, then it will not harm him.

18- The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Our Lord –tabarak wa ta’ala descends every night to the lowest heavens, when there remains the last third part of the night, and He says whoever supplicates to me so that I may answer his supplication, whoever asks of me so that I may grant him what he asks for, whoever seeks my forgiveness so that I may forgive him.

19 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Indeed there is an hour from the night, which if a Muslim asks Allaah in that time from the good of the affairs of this world and the hereafter, then Allaah gives him of it, and that is in every night.

20 – On the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Whoever says, as he leaves from his house:
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ،ولَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ تعالى
In the name of Allaah, I have placed my trust in Allaah, and there is no capability nor is there any power except with Allaah Ta ála
then it is said to him: indeed you have been saved, and you have been protected, and you have been guided, and shaytaan has been kept away from him, so another shaytaan says: how can you affect a man who has indeed been guided and saved and been protected?

21 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
If a man enters his home, and he remembers Allaah when he enters and when he eats his food, the shaytaan says: there is no place for you to spend the night nor is there any dinner, and if he does not remember Allaah when he enters his house then the shaytaan says: you have found a place to spend the night and if he does not remember Allaah while he is eating his food then he says you have found food to eat.

22 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
O my son if you enter your home then say salaams it will be a blessing for you and your family.

23 – When the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – would enter the masjid he would say :
أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ وَبِوَجْهِهِ الْكَرِيمِ وَسُلْطَانِهِ الْقَدِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
- I seek refuge with Allaah The Supreme and with His Noble Face, and His eternal authority from the accursed shaytaan –
A’outhu bil-lahil ‘atheemi, wa bi-wajhihil-kareem, wa bi-sultanihil-qadeem min ‘ash-shaytanir-rajeemi
then he said: if he says this supplication then the shaytaan says: this person has been protected from me for the rest of the day.

24 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
If the people knew what was there (in benefit for them) in the adhaan and praying in the front row, and they could not get to it except by drawing lots, then they would draw lots.

25- The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
There is none from the jinn, mankind and anything else that hears the reach of the muaddhin’s (the caller to pray) voice, except that they will testify for him on the day of Resurrection.

26 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
If you hear the muaddhin, then repeat what he says, then send prayers upon me, since indeed the one who sends prayers upon me once, Allaah sends ten prayers upon him, then ask Allaah for me to be an intercessor since it is a high station in Paradise which is not befitting except for a servant from the servants of Allaah, and I hope that I am the one, so whoever asks [Allaah for] intercession for me then intercession will take place for him.

27 -The Messenger of Allaah- may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Who ever says, when he hears the call to prayer :
اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ
- O Allaah Lord of this perfect call to prayer and Owner of this prayer to be performed, bestow upon Muhammad a station in Paradise and a rank above the rest of creation and give him the honorable station which you have promised him:
Allaahumma rabba hadhihi ‘adda’watit tammati, was-salatil qa’imati, ‘ati Muhammadan ál-waseelata wal faaheelata, wab’ath-hu maqqaman mahmoodan ‘allathee wa’adtahu
Then my intercession occurs for him on the day of Judgment.

28 -A man said O Messenger of Allaah, indeed the callers to the prayer are more favored than we are. So the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said: repeat what they say, and when you finish ask, and you will be given.

29 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
A supplication which is made between the Adhaan and the Iqama is not rejected.

30 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Two things which are not rejected, or rarely rejected. A supplication made at the time of the adhaan, and at the time when the battle becomes severe.

31 -The Prophet - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Shall I not teach you something, which the people who proceeded you attained, and those who come after you will precede with this, and there will be no one better than you except the one who does what you do? They said of course O Messenger of Allaah- may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him. So he said: say: SubanAllaah [far is Allaah from imperfection], Allaahu akbar [Allaah is the Greatest], and Alhamdulillaah [All Praise is to Allaah] at the end of every Salaat 33 times.

32 -The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Whoever says SubhanAllaah at the end of every prayer 33 times, and says AlHamdulillaah 33 times, and says Allaahu akbar 33 times, then this adds up to 99, and if he says –
‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, He has the Dominion and for Him is all praise, and He is capable of all things’
to complete a hundred, then his mistakes/sins are forgiven even if they were equivalent to the foam on the sea.

33 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
There are two characteristics or two qualities that if a Muslim slave of Allaah is continuous upon, will enter Paradise. They are simple but those who do them are few. To say SubhanAllaah at the end of every prayer ten times, and say AlHamdulillah ten times and say Allaahu akbar ten times, which is equivalent to 150 times on the tongue and 1500 on the scales, and he says Allaahu Akbar 34 times when he goes to bed and he says AlHamdulillah 33 times and says SubhanAllaah 33 times, and that is equivalent to 100 on the tongue and 1000 on the scales.

34 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – used to teach us al-Istikhaarah for all matters, just like he used to teach us a chapter from the Quraan, he would say: If any of you intends to undertake a matter then he should pray two rakats other than an obligatory prayer then he should say:
O Allaah I request of You with Your knowledge, and by Your Power I seek capability, and I ask of you of your great favour, since indeed You are the One who is able while I am not, and You know and I do not, and You are the One who knows the unseen, O Allaah if You know that this matter – here he mentions his need - is good for me in this world and for my living and for the matters of my hereafter – or he said, for my affairs now and the future – then decree it for me and make it easy for me and bless it for me, and if You know that this matter is evil for me in this world and for my life and for the matters of my hereafter – or he said, for my affairs now and the affairs of my future – then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree goodness for me where ever it may be and make me pleased with it.

35 - The Messenger of Allaah- may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
The supplication of Yunas, when he supplicated while he was in the belly of the whale:
لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
- there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, far are You from imperfection, indeed I am from amongst the thalimoon ( oppressors) –
La ilaha ‘illa ‘anta, subhanaka ‘innee kuntu minath-thalimeena
No Muslim ever supplicated with this for anything except that Allaah responds to him.

36 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said :
Allaah does not afflict a slave with grief nor sadness, except that if the slave says: -
O Allaah indeed I am Your slave, and the son of Your slave, and the son of Your female slave, my forelock is in Your Hand, Your command over me is forever executed and Your decree over me is just. I ask of You with all Your names, which belong to You, which You have named Yourself with, or which You have taught someone from Your creation or revealed it in Your Book or that which You have taken unto Your self with the knowledge of the unseen with You, that You make the Quraan the life of my heart and light of my breast and keep away from me my sadness, and that my grief goes away –
Allaahumma ‘innee ‘abduka, wabnu ‘abdika, wabnu amatika, nasiyatee biyadika, madhin fiyya hukmuka, adlun fiyya qadha’uka, asaluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, aw anzaltahu fee kitabika, ‘aw allamthu ahadan min khaliqika, aw ista’tharta bihi fee ilmil ghaybi ‘indaka, án taj’alal-qurana rabee’a qalbee, wa noora sadree, wa jala’a huznee, wa thahaba hammee
then Allaah takes away his grief and sadness and replaces it with happiness.

37 – Uthman ibn al-Aas came to the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – and said: O Messenger of Allaah indeed the shaytaan comes between me and my prayer, and my recitation becomes confusing? The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said: This is a shaytaan called khunsabun, so if you sense his presence then seek refuge in Allaah from him and spit on your left hand side three times. Uthman said : I did that and Allaah kept him away from me.

38 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
There is no one from among Allaah’s servants, who is afflicted with an affliction except that he says:
( إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ ) اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا
Indeed we belong to Allaah and indeed to Him is our return - O Allaah recompense me for my affliction and replace it with something better than that
Inna lil-lahi wa inna ‘ilayhi raji’oona, ‘allahumma’jurnee fee museebatee, wa ákhliflee khayran minha
except that Allaah compensates him in what he has been afflicted with, and gives him that which is better than the previous thing.

39 – Alee – may Allaah be pleased with him said:
Shall I not teach you words that the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – taught me that even if you have an equivalent of a mountain of debt upon you that Allaah will pay it off on you behalf? Say:
O Allaah make what You have made lawful sufficient for me, as opposed to what You have made unlawful, and spare me by Your grace, of need of others.
Allahumma kifinee bihalalika ‘an haramika wa ághninee bifadhlika ‘amman siwaka

40 – Uthmaan bin Abee al-Aaas complained to the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – about a pain he had in his body since he had become Muslim, so the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said to him: place your hand on the part of your body that pains you and then say:
بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ
In the name of Allaah, Bismillaah [three times],
and say seven times ‘Aouthu bi’izzatil-lahi waqudratihi min sharri ma ‘ajidu wa’uhathiru:
I seek refuge with Allaah and with His Capability from the evil that I feel and wary of

41 -The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Who ever visits a sick person who has not reached his appointed time, then says for him seven times:
أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ الْعَظِيمَ رَبَّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ أَنْ يَشْفِيَكَ
I ask Allaah The Adheem, Lord of the magnificent Ársh to cure you -
except that Allaah cures him.
As’alul-laha ‘al-adheema, rabbal ‘arshil átheemi an yashfika

42 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Who ever stops at a place on his journey and then says:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created
A’outhu bikalimatil-lahi ‘at-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa
nothing will harm him until he leaves from that place.

43 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Whoever eats some food and then says:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ
All praise be to Allaah Who fed me this food and provided it for me without any ability from my self nor any strength from my self –
except that his previous sins are forgiven.

44 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
You will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another, shall I not show you something that by doing it, will cause you to love one another, spread salaams between yourselves.

45 – Imran bin Hussain said: that a man came to the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – and said: As-salamu 'alaykum (Peace be to you), the Messenger of Allaah said: ten.
Then another man came and said: As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah (Peace be to you and the mercy of Allaah), the messenger of Allaah said: twenty.
Then another man came and said: As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu (Peace be to you and the mercy of Allaah and His blessings), the Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said: thirty. [Note: These are the number of deeds corresponding to the extent of the salam.]

46 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
If one of you wants to have relations with his wife and says:
بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُمَّ جَنِّبْنَا الشَّيْطَانَ وَجَنِّبِ الشَّيْطَانَ مَا رَزَقْتَنَا
In the name of Allaah, O Allaah keep shaytaan away from us and keep shaytaan away from that which You provide for us –
Bismillahi allaahumma jannibna ash-shaytana, wajannib ásh-shaytana ma razaqtana
so if a child is born from them then shaytaan will never be able to harm him.

47 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Whoever sits in a gathering and speaks a lot, then he says before he gets up from his sitting place –
You are far from imperfection o Allaah, and praise is to You, I testify that there is none worthy of worship in truth except You, I seek Your forgiveness, and I repent to You –
Subhanaka allahumma wa bihamdika, ash-hadu alla ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilayka
except that Allaah covers up for him what he said in that gathering.

48 – Sulaymaan bin Suradin said: I was sitting with the Prophet - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – and two men were cursing, and the face of one of them became red, and he became furious. The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said: indeed I know a statement if he says it then his anger will go away, if he says : -
Aoodhoobillaahi min ashaytan ar-rajeem
I seek refuge in Allaah from the accursed shaytaan –
then his anger will go away.

49 - The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Whoever sees some one who has been trialed and then says: -
Praise be to Allaah Who has saved me from what He has trialed you with and chosen me above much of the creation –
Alhamdu lil-lahi allathee afanee mimma ibtalaka bihi, wa fadh-dhalanee ala katheerin mimman khalaqa tafdheelan
then that trial will not afflict him.

50 – The Messenger of Allaah - may peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him – said:
Whoever enters the market place and says -
‘There is none worthy of worship in truth except Allaah Alone, He has no partners, He has the Dominion and for Him is all praise, He gives life and He takes life and He is the Ever living and does not die, in His Hand is goodness and He is capable of all things.’ –
then Allaah writes a thousand thousand good deeds for him, and erases a thousand thousand bad deeds for him, and He raises him up a thousand thousand grades.

A Womans Brain is tied to her Tongue

We believe that success is in the hands of Allah (Subhana wa ta 'ala) and that everything has
been written and destined.. but there are actions that we must be doing
whilst having Tawakul on Allah (Subhana wa ta 'ala)

And I shall mention to you what an old lady, that was very wise and greatly
loved by her husband to a point where he loved to sing love poetry to her
and as they grew old their love and happiness grew with them, said when she
was asked about the secret to her enduring happiness.

She Said: Attaining married life happiness is in the hands of the woman, for
she can make her house a living heaven or turn it into burning hell.

Dont say money for alot of rich women are miserable and have been deserted
by their husbands.

And dont say children for there are alot of women with 10 boys, have
husbands insulting them, not loving them and will probably divorce them.

And dont say cooking because alot of them are experts at cooking, the one of
them cooks all day and yet complains about the maltreatment of and lack of
respect by her husband.

So what is the secret?

What did you do when problems occurred with your husband?

She said: When my husband gets angry and is in rage I used to resort to
respectful silence, beware of silence whilst ridiculing him with your look
for men are smart and get it.

Why dont you leave the room?

She said: Never leave the room, he will think you are running away and dont
want to listen to him, you must keep silent and agreeing to what he says. I
would wait for him until he cools down and then I would tell him in a gentle
voice: Are you done? then I leave because he will get tired and needs to
rest after the rage and shouting, I leave the room to complete my housework
and my children chores and I try not to remember his anger and assault on
me, he will remain by himself tired from the rage he has given me.

What do you then do, do you give him the silent treatment for a few days or
a week?

She said: No, never give the silent treatment, its a bad habbit and is a
double bladed sword, when you boycott him for a week it would be difficult
on him in the beginning and he will try to speak to you but with time he
will get used to it so that if you boycott him for a week he will boycott
you for two.

You have to make him used to the fact that you are the air he breathes, the
water which he drinks and cant live without, be like a gentle breeze and
never like a strong wind.

So what do you do afterwards?

After two hours or more, I give him a glass of juice or a cup of coffee and
tell him please drink, for he is really in need for it and I talk to him
normally, he will ask me: are you angry? and I say No.

He starts to apologize for his harsh talk and starts sweet talking me.

And you believe his apology and sweet talk?

Of course, because I trust myself and because I am not stupid.

You want me to believe his talk whilst he is in rage and disbelieve it
whilst he is calm?

Islam has not approved divorce whilst in rage , and thats divorce! so what
about what happened to me?

She was told: What about your dignity?

She said: What dignity?

Your dignity is when you dont believe a harsh word from an angry person.

And to believe his talk when he is calm.

I forgive him immediately because I have forgotten all the foul language and realized the importance of hearing beneficial talk

And to summarize the above I can say: The secret to a happy marriage is the woman's brain and that happiness's knot is her tongue.

Hasad (Envy and Jealousy) Between Those Seeking Knowledge Is The Severest Form Of Hasad!

Ash-Shaykh al-Uthaymeen, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said:

"Verily, al-Hasad (Envy, Jealousy) is an awful trait which is unfortunately found mostly between the scholars and (between) the students of knowledge; it is (also) found between the business men with regards to each other. Everyone who possesses an occupation he is envied by his colleague in it."

But sadly the hasad between the Scholars and between the students of knowledge is more SEVERE while they should have been the first (of the people) and the most worthy that they the people of knowledge be furthest of the people from Hasad and to be the closest (of the people) to the best of characters.

[The Reference: The Book of Knowledge, page 54, print: Daarul Minhaaj]

Allaah The Most High said:

"And We have made some of you as a trial for others: will you have patience? And your Lord is Ever All-Seer (of everything)." (Al-Furqan 25:20).

A Poet said:

"Remain patient upon the envy of the jealous, for indeed patience will deter them. Indeed the fire will devour itself if it does not find anything else to burn."

Some Oft-Quoted Weak Ahaadeeth

From, "Fasting in Ramadaan as observed by the Prophet" by Shaikh Saleem al-Hilaalee and Shaikh Alee Hassan

Allaah, the One free of all imperfections and Most High, has appointed for the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) trustworthy bearers who expel from it the alterations of the people of falsehood, the misinterpretations of those going beyond bounds, and uncovering the false accretions added to it by those who try to adulterate it.

Throughout the ages many accretions have been mixed with it, either weak ahaadeeth, lies or fabrications and the like and this has been fully explained and made clear by the scholars throughout the ages. One who looks today into the works of writers and speeches of admonition will see that they do not give the slightest attention to this matter except those upon whom is Allaah’s Mercy. Even though scholarly reference works, which explain which ahadeeth are authentic and uncover the weak narrations, are readily available.

In explaining this matter and its evil consequences upon the knowledge and the people, we do not intend to rebuke or accuse anyone. We will just quote some examples of narrations which have been introduced and become well known amongst the people, to the point that you will hardly read an article or hear an admonition except that the weak ahaadeeth have a prominent place in it.

So acting upon his (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) saying: “Convey from me even if it is only a single Aayah...”’ [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (6/361)]

And his (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) saying: “The Deen is sincerity and sincere advising.” [Reported by Muslim (no. 55)]

So we say: The weak ahaadeeth, which have become widespread amongst the people, at every level, are very many, to the point that very few manage to mention anything authentic - despite its being plentiful also. May Allaah have mercy upon the Imaam Abdullaah lbn al-Mubaarak who said: “There is sufficiency in the authentic ahaadeeth so there is no need for what is weak.” So let this imam be our example. And let us stick to the authentic and pure knowledge.

From the weak ahaadeeth which people commonly quote concerning Ramadaan are:

1. “If the servants knew how great Ramadaan was, then they would wish that Ramadaan lasted all year. Indeed, Paradise is decorated for Ramadaan from the start of the year till the next year...” and it is a long hadeeth.

This hadeeth is reported by Ibn Khuzaimah (no. 1886), Ibn al-Jawzee in Kitaabul-Mawdoo’aat (2/188-189) and Aboo Yalaa in his Musnad as occurs in al-Mataalibul-’Aaliyah (46/a-b manuscript) by way of Jareer ibn Ayyoob al Bajalee: from ash-Shabee: from Naafi ibn Burdah: from Aboo Masood al Ghifaaree.

This hadeeth is fabricated (mawdoo), the cause being Jareer ibn Ayyoob. lbn Hajr quotes his biography in Lisaanul-Meezaan (2/101) and says: “Famous for his weakness.” Then he quotes the saying of Aboo Nu’aim about him: “He used to fabricate ahaadeeth,” from al-Bukhaaree: “Munkar in narrating hadeeth,” and from an-Nasaaee: “Abandoned!”

Ibn al-jawzee declared it to be fabricated, and Ibn Khuzaimah said after relating it: “If the narration is authentic, since there is some doubt in the heart about Jareer Ibn Ayyoob al-Bajalee.”

2. “0 people a very great month has come upon you, a month containing a night better than a thousand months. Allaah has made it an obligation to fast in it, and standing in prayer in its night is a supererogatory action. Whoever seeks nearness to Him with a good deed in it will be like one performing an obligatory action in other months... It is a month the beginning of which is a mercy, the middle is forgiveness, and its end is a granting of freedom from the Fire...” It is also a long hadeeth and we have quoted the most well-known parts of it.

This hadeeth is also reported by Ibn Khuzaimah (No. 1887), al-Mahaamulee in his Amaalee (No. 293), and al-Asbahaanee in at-Targheeb (Q/178, B-manuscript) by way of Alee ibn Zayd ibn Jud’aan: from Sa’eed ibn al-Musaayib: from Salmaan.

This isnaad is do’eef due to the weakness of ‘Ale ibn Zayd. Ibn Sad says about him, “He is somewhat weak, he is not used as a proof” Ahmad ibn Hanbal said: “He is not strong.” Ibn Ma’een said: “He is weak.” Ibn Abee Khaithumah said: ‘Weak in everything.” Ibn Khuzaimah said: “I do not accept him as a proof due to his weak memory.” - as occurs in at-Tahdheeb (7/322-323).

Ibn Khuzaimah said after quoting his narration: “If the narration is authentic.” Ibn Hajr says in al-Atraaf: “It is narrated by ‘Ale ibn Zayd ibn Jud’aan alone and he is weak” as As-Suyootee quotes from him in Jamul Jawaami (No. 24,714). lbn Abee Haatim reports from his father in ‘llalul-Hadeeth (1/249) that he said: “The hadeeth is munkar!”

3. “Fast and you will be healthy.”

It is part of a hadeeth reported by Ibn ‘Adiyy in al-Kaamil (7/2521) by way of Nahshal ibn Sa’eed: from ad-Dahhaak: from Ibn Abbaas. At-Tabaraanee reports it in ol-Awsat (I/Q, 69 A-manuscript of Majmo’ ul-Bahrain) and Aboo Nu’aim in at-Tibbun-Nawawee as occurs in Takhreejul-Ihyaa’ (7/401) by way of Muhammad ibn Sulaimaan ibn Abee Daawood: from Zuhair ibn Muhammad: Suhail lbn Abee Saalih: from Aboo Hurairah.

Its isnaad is weak. Aboo Bakr al-Athrum said: “I heard Ahmad say - and he mentioned the narration of the people of Shaam from Zuhair ibn Muhammad, he said: ‘They report ahaadeeth from him which are munkar’”

Aboo Haatim said: “There is some weakness in his memory, his ahaadeeth narrated in Iraaq are better than his hadeeth narrated in Shaam due to his weak memory.” Al-Alee said: “These ahaadeeth which the people of Shaam narrate from him do not please me,” as occurs in Tahdheebul-Kamaal (9/417).

Muhammad Ibn Sulaimaan is from Shaam and has a biography in Taareekh Dimishq (15 Q,386 - manuscript) - so his narrations from Zuhair, as the scholars have stated, are munkar and this hadeeth is one of them!

4. “He who abandons fasting during a day of Ramadaan without a valid excuse, or illness - then even if he were to fast for ever it would not make up for it.”

This hadeeth is quoted in disconnected form by al-Bukhaaree in his Saheeh (Fathul-Baaree. 4/160) without an isnaad. It is connected by Ibn Khuzaimah in his Saheeh (No. 1987), at-Tirmidhee (No.723) Aboo Daawood (No.2397). lbn Maajah (No. 1672), an-Nasaa’ee in al-Kubraa as occurs in Tahfatul Ashraaf (10/373), al-Baihaqee (4/228) and Ibn -Iajr in Taghleequt-To’leeq (3/170) by way of Abul-Mutawwas: from his father: from Aboo Hurairah.

Ibn Hajr says in Fathul-Baaree (4/161): “They disagree greatly in their narration from Habeeb ibn Abee Thaabit, it has three weaknesses: (i) contradiction of its narrators, (ii) the condition of Abul-Mutawwas is unknown, (ii) doubt about whether his father met Aboo Hurairah or not.”

Ibn Khuzaimah says after reporting it: “If the narration is authentic, since I do not know Abul Mutawwas or his father.” So this hadeeth is also weak.

These are four ahaadeeth which have been declared weak and unreliable by the scholars, yet we still hear them and see them every day in the blessed month of Ramadaan in particular, and at other times. It is apparent that some of these ahadeeth contain parts whose meaning is correct and established in our Sharee’ah in the Book or the Sunnah. However, this on its own does not allow us to attribute to Allah's Messenger (sallalalhu alaihi wa-sallam) that which is not established authentically from him, particularly since this Ummah alone - to the exception of all previous nations has been particularized by Allaah, the One free of all imperfections, with the use of isnaads (chains of narration). Through them we can ascertain what is acceptable and what has been invented, and what is authentic (saheeh) from that which is not. It is a very precise branch of knowledge, and he indeed spoke well who described it as: “The study of what is narrated and the measure for the authenticity of narrations.”

Sha'baan : Misconceptions and Realities

shared by Shumaila Siddiqui

Growing up in Pakistan, the month of Sha'baan would bring in a lot of excitement and celebration. And that was because celebrating the night of the fifteenth of Sha'baan was a big thing and considered a very virtuous act, indeed. Men would gather in the masjid while the women prepared 'Halwas' and sweets, preparations were made for all night vigils or "Shabeenas" as they were called, buses were made available to take the men to visit the graveyards and flyers were distributed to everyone containing a long list of 'special prayers' so that they could stay up all night praying.

But, Alhamdulillaah, how Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta'ala protects His Deen. When Allaah enabled me to study this beautiful religion of ours, all that changed. I realized that all those 'special prayers', all those night vigils, all those Halwas and all those graveyard visits were really not the way of the Prophet . In fact all that was far...far away from his Sunnah and the Sharee'ah that he brought.

And so I thought I would bring to attention some of the misconceptions and wrong ideas attached to this month as this ignorance and innovation has become so rampant, that it has become a sort of an epidemic, not only in Pakistan but in practically every Muslim community that exists.

Misconception # 1: The night of the 15th of Sha'baan should be singled out for worship, prayer, etc.
Clarification: Our best example and role model is the Prophet and he never, ever singled out this night for worship or qiyaam nor did his Sahaba.
Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:"There is no saheeh hadeeth concerning the night of the fifteenth of Sha'baan. All the ahaadeeth that have been narrated concerning that are mawdoo' (fabricated) and da'eef (weak), and have no basis. There is nothing special about this night, and no recitation of Qur'aan or prayer, whether alone or in congregation, is specified for this night. What some of the scholars have said about it being special is a weak opinion. It is not permissible to single it out for any special actions. This is the correct view. And Allaah is the Source of strength." (Fataawa Islamiyyah, 4/511)

Misconception # 2: There are special prayers to be offered on this night.
Clarification: The truth of the matter is that there are NO special prayers to be offered on this night specifically. And all those 'ahaadeeth' giving you long lists of special 'formulas' that are "supposed to guarantee you Allaah's forgiveness and Jannah" are all fabricated, false and innovations in our Deen. If there were such prayers, the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam) would have told us about them and we would have had evidence of him and the Sahaba doing it.

Misconception # 3: Allaah descends to the first heavens on this night to forgive us.
Clarification: Allaah's descending to the first heaven does not only happen on the night of the fifteenth of Sha'baan. Rather it happens every single night of the year.
The Prophet said: "Every night when it is the last third of the night, our Lord, the Superior, the Blessed, descends to the nearest heaven and says: Is there anyone to invoke Me that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me so that I may grant him his request? Is there anyone asking My forgiveness so that I may forgive him?. " (Bukhaari)
Thus, when 'Abd-Allaah ibn al-Mubaarak was asked about the descent of Allaah on the night of the fifteenth of Sha'baan, he said to the one who asked him: "O weak one! The night of the fifteenth?! He descends every night!"

Misconception # 4: This is the night when our fate, lifespan, and provisions are decreed.
Clarification: Some people think that the "blessed night" (laylatim-mubarakah) mentioned in Surah ad-Dukhaan (44): 3, refers to the night of 15th Shabaan, when Allah decrees our lifespan, provisions and fate. In fact, they even pray 6 rakahs, 2 for each of these things. However, all that is fabricated and far, far away from the Sunnah. And, in reality, the "blessed night" mentioned in Surah ad-Dukhaan, actually is referring to Laylatul Qadr that comes in Ramadhaan. (Tafseer Ibn Kathir of Surah al-Qadr)

Misconception # 5: One should fast on the day of the fifteenth.
Clarification: Here again, there is no saheeh reports that tell us that the Prophet or his Sahaabah ever picked this day specifically to fast. The Sunnah of the Prophet was to fast most of this month and not just the 15th. However, if the fifteenth of Sha'baan coincides with a Monday or Thursday, or with the three white days or if a person is generally fasting, without associating seeking extra rewards to fasting this specific day, then it is allowed. (Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid)

Misconception # 6: This is the night when the souls of departed ones return to their families.
Clarification: Here again, some people misunderstand the ayaat in Surah al-Qadr and think that the 'sending down of the Ruh' as mentioned in this Surah refers to the souls of dead people returning to see their families, even though it refers to Jibreel (Tafseer Ibn Kathir). And that is why we see women preparing the sweets, the Halwas and other 'goodies' for the souls of their loved ones.
Not only is that in itself an erroneous, deviant belief and bid'ah, but to believe that the souls of the dead can return back to the world and meet with their relatives is also totally incorrect and false. The teachings of the Qur'aan and the Sunnah clearly state that the souls of the dead do not return back to the world. Besides, they don't even eat the Halwas. It is actually you who eats it!

Misconception # 7: Visiting graveyards especially this night is something good.
Clarification: Although the Prophet encouraged visiting graves, he forbade singling out any day or night for any kinds of good deeds if it is not prescribed in the Sharee'ah. And he did not specifically visit the graveyard on the night of the 15th of Sha'aan. The hadeeth of Aisha that mentions that the Prophet visited the graveyard this night is not authentic and thus does not have any proof for visiting graves specifically on this night of Shabaan.

Misconception # 8: Even if the ahaadeeth about worship on this night are weak, one can still do it.
Clarification: The correct scholarly view is that weak ahaadeeth should not be followed at all, even if they speak of righteous deeds or of targheeb and tarheeb (promises and warnings). The saheeh reports are sufficient and the Muslim has no need to follow the da'eef reports.
Shaykh Ahmad Shaakir said: "There is no difference between rulings or righteous deeds; we do not take any of them from da'eef reports, rather no one has the right to use any report as evidence unless it is proven to be soundly narrated from the Messenger of Allaah in a saheeh or hasan hadeeth."

Misconception # 9: Look at all those people doing it. How can they all be wrong?
Clarification: The Muslim is supposed to refer to Allaah and His Messenger (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa Sallam)'s Sunnah, if there is any confusion or dispute about matters and NOT what the rest of the world is doing.
"O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger and those of you who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allaah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination [al-Nisaa' 4:59]
Shaykh Ibn Jibreen said: "These reports (about worship and fasting an the 15th of Sha'baan) became very well known in some countries which were overwhelmed by ignorance; One should not be deceived by the large numbers of ignorant people who do these things."

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Whoever does an action that is not part of this matter of ours will have it rejected.” Narrated by Muslim (1718). Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Sharh Muslim (12/16):
May Allah save us from falling into any kind of innovated matter in this Deen.(Aameen)

And Allah knows best

INNOVATIONS | Celebrations | Other celebrations |

Standing the night of the 15th of Sha'baan in prayer and fasting during it's day

Question: Is standing the night of the 15th of Sha'baan in prayer and fasting during it's day legislated?

Response: Nothing firm and reliable has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) that he stood in prayer in the night and fasted during the day of the 15th of Sha'baan. So the night of the 15th of Sha'baan is like any other night, and if someone is a regular worshipper during other nights, then he may stand the night in prayer on this night without assuming anything special (because of it being the night of the 15th of Sha'baan). This is because specifying a time for any act of worship requires a authentic proof, so if there is no authentic proof then the act is regarded as an innovation and all innovations are misguidance. Likewsie, regarding specifically fasting during the 15th day of Sha'baan, then no (authentic) proof has been established on the authority of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) to indicate the legislation of fasting on that particular day.

As for that which is mentioned from the ahaadeeth regarding this subject, then all of it is weak as the people of knowledge have indicated. However, whoever has the habit of fasting the 13th, 14th and 15th (of every month), then he can continue and fast during Sha'baan as he fasts during the other months, without assuming anything special about the 15th of Sha'baan. Also, the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) used to increase in fasting during this month (Sha'baan), however, he did not particularise the 15th day, rather proceeded as per norm.

Different levels of Innovation

Question:
Is there a difference between the innovation that is considered a sin and the innovation that takes a person outside the fold of Islam?

Answer:
Yes; there is innovation that takes a person outside the fold of Islam such as denying that ALLAH will be seen in the afterlife, denying that ALLAH is above His creation, making supplication to other than ALLAH, sacrificing to other than ALLAH, these are all types of innovation that take a person outside the fold of Islam, but we don’t declare a person to be outside the fold of Islam until we have established the proof against him. This is because some of the people have had the doubts heaped upon them and they are far removed from the era of the Prophet Hood and far removed from the light of Prophet Hood. As a result they fall into innovations such as these; and these innovations take the person outside the fold of Islam. We say, denying that ALLAH will be seen in the afterlife is disbelief, as is denying that ALLAH is above His creation, and claiming that the Koran is created is also disbelief, major disbelief. But as for the one who says, I bear witness that no one has the right to be worshipped except and ALLAH and Muhammad is the Messenger of ALLAH and he prays and he fasts and he desires paradise and he believes in it etc, etc; then perhaps some of the doubts of the people of falsehood came to him and piled up upon him until he fell into the aforementioned innovations. Then we say to him, you fell into disbelief and the proof is this and that and we make it clear to him. So if ALLAH gives him the success to return to the truth then all praises belong to ALLAH, if not then we will say he is a disbeliever only after the proof has been established against him. As for the innovation that is sin then it is different than this. For example I see him with rosary beads (dhikir beads) these rosary beads, oh my brothers, there origin is taken from the Christians and the Hindus! These beads are something which is foreign to the Muslims. Who were they taken from? (They were) taken from the Hindus and the Christians, the Christians took them from the Hindus. And I have seen for myself a Christian monk wearing these beads and a Hindu monk wearing these beads and they were using these beads and now the innovators from the Muslims have taken these beads from them. And other than this from the different types of innovations such as the different types of remembrance that have in them deviation from what is correct as for these types of innovations we don’t say they remove someone from the fold of Islam. We don’t say that a person has left Islam except with proof, and we don’t say that a person is a sinner (fasiq) except with proof. So although it is bida you don’t automatically make him a sinner because of it, but he becomes a sinner after it has been made clear to him after it has been made clear and he stays upon this bida then he becomes a sinner (fasiq).

INNOVATION ALERT - 15th Sha'baan 1431 / Tuesday 27th July 2010

Specifying the day of the 15th of Sha'baan by fasting or reciting the Qur.aan or performing naafilah prayers

ref: http://www.fatwa-online.com/fataawa/innovations/celebrations/cel005/0001102_2.htm

Question: We see some people specifying the 15th of Sha'baan with particular supplications and reciting the Qur.aan and performing naafilah prayers. So what is the correct position concerning this, and may Allaah reward you with good?

Response: That which is correct is that fasting the 15th of Sha'baan or specifying it with reciting (the Qur.aan) or making (particular) supplications has no basis. So the day of the 15th of Sha'baan is like any other 15th day of other months. So from that which is known is that it has been legislated for a person to fast the 13th, 14th and 15th of every month, however, Sha'baan is characterised unlike the other months in that (except for Ramadhaan) the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) used to fast more in Sha'baan than any other month . So he used to either fast all of Sha'baan or just a little. Therefore, as long as it does not cause difficulty for a person, it is befitting to increase in fasting during Sha'baan in adherence to the example of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam).

Giving sadaqah specifically on the night of 15th of Sha'baan

ref: http://www.fatwa-online.com/fataawa/innovations/celebrations/cel005/0001102_1.htm

Question: When my father was alive, he entrusted me to give sadaqah (charity) according to my means on the 15th of Sha'baan every year, and likewise I have been doing this ever since. However, some people have admonished me for doing so saying it is not permissible. So is giving sadaqah on the night of the 15th of Sha'baan permissible according to the willment of my father or not? Kindly advise us and may Allaah reward you with good.

Response: To specify the giving of sadaqah on the night of the 15th of Sha'baan every year is an innovation, and despite your father having entrusted you with that, it is not permissible. It is befitting you give this sadaqah without specifying the night of the 15th of Sha'baan, rather do so every year and in whichever month, but without particularising any one month (on a consistent basis). However, it is permissible to do so in the month of Ramadhaan (for the evidence which indicates so).

And with Allaah lies all success and may Allaah send prayers and salutations upon our Prophet (sal-Allaahu `alayhe wa sallam) and his family and his companions.

Seven Gates of Hell

The Seven Gates of Hell

Allah says:
"Indeed the hell fire is the dwelling place of them all. It has seven gates and within each gate there is an
appropriate punishment for each inhabitant…" (Hijr: 44)

Imam As Sa'di (Rahimahullah) mentions in his tafseer: "The gates of Hell are structured one gate below the
other descending, opposite the gates of paradise, which have one gate above the other ascending. The
distance between each gate is 500 years prepared for Iblees and all of his followers.

The First Gate: This gate is called Jahannam, as Allah mentions in many verses in the Qur'an:

قالوا لا تنفروا في الحر قل نار جهنم أشد حرا لو كانوا يفقهون
"They said (i.e. the hypocrites): "Don't go out for war during the heat!" Say (i.e. Muhammad) the fire of
Jahannam is even hotter if you only understood." (Tawbah: 81)

This gate is called Jahannam because the fire will scorch the faces of the men and women who enter it!!!
Their faces will be sullen and glum. It will eat away at their flesh and Allah says:

كلما نضجت جلودهم بدلنناهم جلودا غيرها ليذوقوا العذاب
"Every time the fire eats away their flesh We will replace it with new flesh so they can taste the
punishment…" (Nisaa':56)

Imam As Sa'di (Rahimahullah) mentioned in his tafseer: this is in response to their obstinacy and resistance
in the life of this world. Just as they continued to reject obedience to Allah and submission to Him, likewise
the fire will continue to burn up their flesh and when it reaches the point of almost being obliterated, Allah
will remove the old flesh and replace it with new flesh, a just recompense for their rebellion in this life."

The Second Gate: This Gate is called Ladha', as Allah says in the Qur'an:

كلا إنها لظى نزاعة للشوى تدعوا من أدبر وتولى وجمع فأوعى...
"There is no way out for them, except the Ladha (i.e. Fierce Blaze) will certainly scorch the inward organs
and the outward flesh! It will invite everyone who turned away from following the truth, heedless of it
and gathered wealth but refused to spend it in the cause of Allah…" (Ma'arij:15)

This level of hell is called Ladha because the fire will eat away at their body parts one by one, both
internally and externally. It will invite those who abandoned Tawheed (i.e. Islamic monotheism) and turned
away from that which the Prophet (Sallahu alaihi wa salam) came with.
The Third Gate: This gate is called Saqar, as Allah says:

سأصليه سقر وما أدراك ما سقر ولا تبقي واتذر لواحة للبشر عليها تسعة عشر...
"We will throw him into the Saqar and what will make you know what Saqar is? It is a scorching fire, it
spares nothing and leaves nothing behind it will shake them vehemently and over it are nineteen angels "
(Mudathir: 26-30)

It is called Saqar because it will eat up the flesh of the human being and not his bones. But listen to what
Allah mentioned about those who enter this particular level of hell:

في جنات يتسائلون عن المجرمين ما سلككم في سقر قالوا لم نك من المصلين ولم نك نطعم المسكين وكنا نخوض مع الخائضين
وكنا نكذب بيوم الدين حتى أتانا اليقين.
"Those in paradise will ask the criminals what has landed you all in Saqar? They will say: "We were not of
those who used to pray and we didn't feed the poor and we used to talk vainly with those who talked vain
talk and we used to deny the Day of Recompense until death came to us and we saw the reality of all that
we denied" (Mudathir:40-47)

So there are a total of four things that they were guilty of, which ultimately landed them in this level of the
hell fire:

The First: They did not offer salat (i.e. prayer) and the scholars also use this as a proof to show that
abandoning the salat is Kufr (i.e. disbelief). And it also shows how serious it is because it was the first thing
they mentioned out of all the offenses they were guilty of. In essence they refused to give Allah His right.
The Second: They did not feed the poor. Meaning they refused to benefit the needy on all levels.
The Third: They used to talk vainly with those who talk in vain. Meaning they used to indulge in falsehood
and used it to argue unjustly against the truth.
The Fourth: They used to deny and reject the Day of Recompense and this is the end result of delving into
falsehood.

The Fourth Gate: This gate is called Al Hutamah, as Allah says:

كلا لينبذن في الحطمة وماأدراك مالحطمة نار الله الموقدة التي تطلع على الأفئدة إنها عليهم مؤصد فعمد ممددة
"Nay they will be thrown into Al Hutamah (i.e. Crushing Fire). And what will make you know what Al
Hutamah is? The fire of Allah kindled by men and stones which scorches the hearts. Surely it is vaulted over
them in pillars widely extended." (Humazah: 4-9)

It is called Al Hutamah because it will shatter the bones of the human being and burn the heart and other
internal organs. The fire will start at his feet and burn all the way through until it reaches the heart!!! Allah
says:

"Indeed it (i.e. the hell fire) spits out sparks the size of mansions, as if they were yellow herds" (Mursalat: 32-
33)

The individual in the fire will turn completely black when the sparks ascend up and scorch their faces, hands
and bodies. They will cry tears until their tear ducts are completely exhausted then they will cry blood and
when the blood is completely exhausted they will cry pus until the pus is completely exhausted!!!! They will
leave behind a pool so great that if a ship wanted to set sail on top of what they cried it would have no
problem doing so!!!

The Fifth Gate: This particular gate is called Jaheem, as Allah mentions in many verses:

خذوه فغلواثم الجحيم صلوا ثم في سلسلة ذرعها سبعون ذراعا فاسلكوه إنه كان لا يؤمن بالله العظيم ولا يحض على طعام
المسكين...
"Seize him and shackle him!! Then roast him in Jaheem (i.e. hell fire) in chains that are seventy cubits long.
This is because he did not believe in Allah, the Magnificent and he did not encourage the feeding of the
poor." (Al Haqq: 30-34)

This gate is called Jaheem because it is actually one big piece of hot coal that is bigger than the lowest
heaven as we know it. And look at the crimes of the one who enters this particular gate:

The First: He did not have the correct belief in Allah. This is to correct the misunderstanding of those who
deride having the correct aqeedah and make discouraging statements such as "Why do they spend so much
time studying Aqeedah?!!" or "We can learn Tawheed in 10 minutes!" or those who simply say: "I just believe
in Allah!" This is a very nonchalant approach towards the greatest right over us as human beings, which is
the right of Allah (i.e. Tawheed) the right to be worshiped alone without any partners.

The Second: They refused to give the creation their rights, which is the most important right after the right
of Allah. He did not encourage the feeding of the poor.

The Sixth Gate: This gate is called Sa'eer, as Allah says:

فريق في الجنة وفريق في السعير
"A group in paradise and a group in Sa'eer (i.e. the blazing fire)" (Shurah: 7)

Allah also says about the people therein:

و قالوا لو كنا نسمع أو نعقل ما كنا في أصحاب السعير فاعترفوا بذنبهم فسحقا لأصحاب السعير
"And they will say: "If we had listened and used our intellect we would not be inhabitants of As Sa'eer (i.e.
blazing fire)!! They confessed their sins but away with the companions of As Sa'eer" (Mulk: 10-11)

This gate of Hell is called As Sa'eer because it is constantly kindling, rather it has never ceased to kindle from
the moment it was created!!

The Seventh Gate: This gate is called Al Haawiyah, as Allah says:

وأما من خفت موازينه فأمه هاوية وما أدراك ما هيه نار حامية
"As for the one whose scales are light, then the Hawiyah will embrace him like a mother embraces her child.
And what will make you know what Al Hawiyah is? It is a kindled fir burning hot." (Al Qa'riah: 8-11)

This gate of hell is called Al Hawiyah because whoever enters this level of the hell fire will never come out!!!
Notice Allah said that the fire will embrace him like a mother embraces her child!! In this level of the hell
fire there is a well that will let out a breeze of fire and when this breeze comes out it will be so hot and
powerful that all of the fires in the other levels of hell will seek refuge in Allah from it!!!

In this level of the hell fire there is a mountain made of fire and the enemies of Allah will be laid on their
faces on this mountain and their hands will be tied to their necks and their necks tied to their feet and over
them will stand the Zabaaniyah, who are angels that guard this particular level of the hell fire, as Allah
says:

"And We will call the Zabaaniyah (i.e. angels who guard the hell fire)…" (Alaq: 18)

Saying of the Salaf: The blessed marriage according to the sunnah

Maa shaa 'Allah this was a beautiful explanation:

Yahyâ b. Yahyâ Al-NaysâbûrÎ reports:

I was once with Sufyân b. ‘Uyainah – Allah have mercy on him, when a man came to him and said, “O Abû Muhammad, I complain to you of so-and-so”, meaning his wife, “I am the lowest and most despicable thing to her.” [Sufyân] lowered his head for a few moments, then said, “Perhaps you wanted her in order to better your status.” The man said, “Indeed, o Abû Muhammad.” Sufyân said, “Whoever goes for glory will be tried with ignominy, whoever goes for wealth will be tried with poverty, but whoever goes for religiousness, Allah will bring together for him glory and wealth with the religion.” He then started to narrate to him:

We were four brothers: Muhammad, ‘Umrân, IbrâhÎm and I. Muhammad was the eldest, ‘Umrân was the youngest, and I was in the middle. When Muhammad wanted to marry, he desired status and married a woman of higher standing, so Allah tried him with ignominy. ‘Umrân desired wealth, so he married a richer woman and Allah tried him with poverty: [her family] took everything from him and gave him nothing.

I pondered their situation. Mu’ammar b. Râshid once came to us so I consulted him on the situation and told him the story of my brothers. He reminded me of the hadÎth of Yahyâ b. Ja’dah and the hadÎth of ‘Â`ishah. The hadÎth of Yahyâ b. Ja’dah states that the Prophet – Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – said, “A woman is married for four things: her religion, her status (lineage), her wealth or her beauty; so take the religious one and be successful.” The hadÎth of ‘Â`ishah states that the Prophet – Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – said, “The most blessed woman is she who is easiest to maintain.”

Thus, I chose [to marry a woman of] religion and modest dowry, in accordance with the Sunnah of Allah’s Messenger – Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, and Allah gave me status and wealth along with the religion.

Abû Nu’aym, Hilyatu Al-Awliyâ` 7:289, 290.

Note
The first hadÎth is recorded by Al-BukhârÎ and Muslim. The second is found in Al-Nasâ`Î and other collections but has been graded weak by scholars including Shaykh Al-AlbânÎ. However, scholars point out there is another narration that supports and adds to its meaning. This hadÎth states:
It is from the blessing in a woman that she has an easy dowry, an easy proposal [via her guardian] and an easy womb (i.e. she is fertile and bares children without difficulty). One of the reporters of this narration, ‘Urwah, said “And I say from myself, one of the first signs of evil from a woman is for her to have a high dowry.”
This hadÎth is recorded by Imâm Ahmad and others and is graded hasan by Shaykh Al-AlbânÎ.
